The AION V is one of the latest Chinese electric SUVs arriving in the UK, and after spending time behind the wheel, it left a stronger impression than I expected. Built by GAC Group under its AION sub-brand, the V positions itself as a practical family EV, but what stood out most was just how spacious and genuinely premium it feels inside.
Roughly comparable in size to a Tesla Model Y, the AION V features a 75.3 kWh battery paired with a single electric motor producing 204 horsepower. A claimed range of up to 317 miles makes it competitive on paper, while fast charging at up to 180 kW allows a 10–80 percent top-up in around 24 minutes.
Inside, the cabin is dominated by a large central touchscreen and minimalist layout, but the real highlight is passenger space. Rear legroom is particularly impressive, easily accommodating six-foot passengers, while Premium Pack models add features such as genuine leather upholstery, massaging front seats, rear tray tables, and even a temperature-controlled storage compartment.
Material quality also feels a step above many rivals in this price range. The seats are comfortable, the cabin feels solidly put together, and overall refinement is strong during everyday driving.
On the road, the AION V prioritises comfort over sportiness. The steering is light, visibility is good thanks to the upright proportions, and standard features such as the 360-degree camera make it easy to manoeuvre in tighter spaces. Performance is more than adequate for daily use, with smooth acceleration and quiet motorway cruising.
However, the softer setup does mean the AION V feels less composed when driven harder through corners, and the infotainment system can occasionally be frustrating due to layered menus and inconsistent controls.
Pricing starts from £36,450 in the UK, with an eight-year care package included covering warranty, servicing, and roadside assistance. For buyers prioritising interior comfort, passenger space, and a luxury-style experience without paying premium-brand prices, the AION V makes a compelling case.
